National School Breakfast Week might be over, but Boston Public Schools is still serving up breakfast for FREE every day in all Boston Public Schools!  Last week, in celebration of National School Breakfast Week, Whitson’s Culinary Group’s Heidi the Hyenna, Luke the Lion and Ranger Ray visited around 30 classrooms across 4 schools, to talk to students about the importance of eating a healthy breakfast every day.

So come on into school a little earlier and have breakfast with us everyday!

Happy Food Day!

Food Day is a special day that celebrates healthy, locally grown food and encourage people to understand where their food comes from, how it is made, and why we need to eat healthier as a country.

BPS celebrated Food Day along with the kickoff of the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) at three participating  elementary schools including the Mather, Nathan Hale, and Sarah Greenwood.

Two special guests, Jillian the Giraffe and Ranger Ray, from Whitsons joined the fun to talked with students about Jillian’s love for fruits and vegetables and how important it is for students to eat their fruits and vegetables.

At the Sarah Greenwood, FFVP Program Coordinator, Phoebe Flemming also read What’s on My Plate to students as they chowed down on grape tomatoes and locally grown apples. Other FFVP snacks this week included carrot sticks and Bosc pears.

We are grateful to the FFVP on-site coordinators, principals, teachers, and everyone else who helps make this wonderful program run. Thank you!

How did YOU celebrate Food Day?

Wednesday April 4, Boston Public School’s Department of Food & Nutrition Services (FNS) in partnership with Whitsons Culinary Group launched a travelling salad bar program at the Nathan Hale School in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood.

The salad bar was overwhelmingly well-received by students and staff at the Hale School, thanks in large to the support of the entire FNS team and Principal Sandra Mitchell-Woods.  Students were offered fresh lettuces, cherry tomatoes, sliced peaches, cucumbers, shredded carrots, low fat shredded mozzarella, and garbanzo beans as a side salad along with a choice of whole grain mac and cheese or a whole grain turkey sandwich.

The Nathan Hale is one of our “Satellite Schools” – schools without a kitchen on site – serviced by Whitsons Culinary.  Between the spring and fall of 2011, FNS launched permanent bars in 5 high schools with full cafeterias.  The travelling salad bar is a pilot project with the intention of increasing the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables at Satellite Schools, and fostering food equity across the district.

Pending a positive response from students and staff, the program will expanded with additional travelling salad bars next year.

Food & Nutrition Services invites you to their 2011 K-12 Food Show on Thursday, August 25th from 4 pm – 6pm at Frederick Pilot Middle School. Come sample tasty, healthy foods as well as new food offerings from local vendors and Whitsons Culinary Group – the new satellite school meals provider. You can also learn about exciting programs and initiatives happening in Boston Public Schools. All guests will have a chance to win door prizes! The Food Show is open to all BPS students, parents, teachers, administrators, and the community at large.
